Our Story

Alpine Precision Tree Services is a fully-insured residential, commercial and government tree service; owned and operated by John and Laura Newsome in Canmore, Alberta. John is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture.

From small beginnings of just John, one truck and chipper in 2008, we have slowly built the company over the years. APTS serves Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise and beyond. We have the equipment and experience to handle small residential jobs to large-scale projects for urban development, FireSmart, Pine Beetle projects, etc. We have a full line of equipment including: 2 chip trucks, 2 chippers, a job-site equipment trailer, stump grinder, excavator, mobile elevated work platform, rubber tracked mini skid steer, ATV, deep root fertilizer, brush saws, and a full range of chainsaws. APTS now employs 6 trained and skilled tree workers, including 1 ISA Certified Arborist, and 2 TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) certified with the International Society of Arboriculture and TPAQ (Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualification) certified with the American Society of Consulting Arborists. At Alpine Precision Tree Services, we take pride in working closely with one another, and our clients.

With safety as our number one priority we are SECOR certified with the Government of Alberta. You can rest assured that Alpine Precision Tree Services LTD, goes above and beyond to ensure the well-being of our clients, their property, our crew, the public and the environment. Safety, quality and professionalism are our top priorities.


Our Team

John Newsome

Owner/Operator and Arborist for APTS since purchasing the company in 2008. Local Albertan from the small farm town of Cremona. He has brought his wealth of knowledge with machinery, leadership and mentoring, passion for trees and excellent client service. John is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture, and he has a plethora of knowledge in all things Arboriculture. He is iconic in providing his team with amazing opportunities to develop and grow, cultivating confidence and success. Safety of his team and client satisfaction are his top priorities.

Danny Finn

Danny has been a valued member of Alpine Precision Tree Services since 2014. Originally from County Cork, Ireland, he has grown with the company through hard work, dedication, and a passion for the arboriculture industry. Today, he proudly serves as General Manager, leading the team with a hands-on approach and a commitment to excellence.

As an ISA Certified Arborist, Danny combines technical expertise with years of field experience. He understands every aspect of the business and is always looking for innovative and efficient ways to deliver exceptional results for clients.

Danny is passionate about building strong relationships with customers, supporting his team, and maintaining the high standards that Alpine Precision is known for. His strong work ethic, and unmistakable Irish charm make him a favorite among both clients and crew members.

Eric Scott-Iversen

Originally from North Vancouver, Eric joined the Alpine Precision team in early 2022. Since then, he has become an integral part of the crew, bringing a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a commitment to safety and professionalism to every project.

As an ISA Certified Arborist and Crew Supervisor, Eric combines technical expertise with hands-on experience in the field. An accomplished tree climber, he plays a key role in overseeing job site operations, supporting his team, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Eric takes pride in creating a productive and positive work environment while delivering exceptional service to clients. His leadership, attention to detail, and dedication to arboriculture make him a valued member of the Alpine Precision team and a trusted presence on every job site.

Theo van Zyl

Born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, Theo earned his Forestry Technician Diploma in Hamilton, Ontario before making Alberta home. Having lived in Canmore for over six years, he has been a valued member of the Alpine Precision team since 2020 and now serves as a Crew Supervisor.

With a 15-year career in wildfire management, Theo brings extensive knowledge of FireSmart practices, and safe work procedures to every project. As a experienced chainsaw operator, he is known for his strong leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to building a positive and productive team environment.

Passionate about continuous learning, Theo is currently working toward becoming an ISA Certified Arborist while exploring new opportunities within the arboriculture industry. His dedication, professionalism, and enthusiasm for the outdoors make him a trusted leader and valued member of the Alpine Precision team.


Mel Heyd

A proud Metis Albertan, Mel has called Canmore home since 2014 and has been an integral part of the Alpine Precision team since 2021. As the first point of contact for many clients, she is the friendly voice on the phone and the person behind the emails, helping ensure every customer receives exceptional service from start to finish.

With over a decade of administrative experience, Mel manages the day-to-day operations of the office and plays a key role in keeping the business running smoothly. Her strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and dedication to maintaining health and safety programs help support both the team and clients alike.

In recent years, Mel has developed a passion for arboriculture and has become increasingly involved in field operations. Holding a WTA Level 3 Chainsaw Certification, she continues to expand her skills and knowledge in the tree care industry, with the goal of becoming a tree climber and learning the technical aspects of tree removal. Her enthusiasm, versatility, and commitment to growth make her a valued member of the Alpine Precision team.

Originally from Kaslo, British Columbia, Ethan has called the Bow Valley home for the past eight years. His positive attitude, friendly personality, and strong work ethic make him a valued member of the Alpine Precision Tree Services team.

Ethan brings a growing skill set to the field, with a particular strength in rigging and the technical aspects of tree work. Holding a Level 2 WTA Chainsaw Certification, he is committed to performing every job safely and efficiently while continuing to expand his knowledge within the industry.

Passionate about arboriculture and professional development, Ethan is working toward becoming an ISA Certified Arborist. His dedication to learning, combined with his enthusiasm for the work, make him an important part of the Alpine Precision team and a trusted presence on every job site.
