Our Story
Alpine Precision Tree Services is a fully-insured residential, commercial and government tree service; owned and operated by John and Laura Newsome in Canmore, Alberta. John is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture.
From small beginnings of just John, one truck and chipper in 2008, we have slowly built the company over the years. APTS serves Banff, Canmore, Lake Louise and beyond. We have the equipment and experience to handle small residential jobs to large-scale projects for urban development, FireSmart, Pine Beetle projects, etc. We have a full line of equipment including: 2 chip trucks, 2 chippers, a job-site equipment trailer, stump grinder, excavator, mobile elevated work platform, rubber tracked mini skid steer, ATV, deep root fertilizer, brush saws, and a full range of chainsaws. APTS now employs 5 trained and skilled tree workers, including 1 ISA Certified Arborist, and 2 TRAQ (Tree Risk Assessment Qualification) certified with the International Society of Arboriculture and TPAQ (Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualification) certified with the American Society of Consulting Arborists. At Alpine Precision Tree Services, we take pride in working closely with one another, and our clients.

Our Team
John Newsome
Owner/Operator and Arborist for APTS since purchasing the company in 2008. Local Albertan from the small farm town of Cremona. He has brought his wealth of knowledge with machinery, leadership and mentoring, passion for trees and excellent client service. John is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture, and he has a plethora of knowledge in all things Arboriculture. He is iconic in providing his team with amazing opportunities to develop and grow, cultivating confidence and success. Safety of his team and client satisfaction are his top priorities.

Danny Finn
Danny has been with APTS since 2014. He is a key crew member from County Cork, Ireland. He has progressed rapidly through mentorship and training, which has flourished his leadership into site supervisor. Danny is a Certified Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture. He is a lead tree climber who loves finding new ways of working most efficiently. He values hard work and client satisfaction. We know you will enjoy his Irish charm, and confidence when he is on site.

Greg Skeavington
Originally from Kenora, Ontario, Greg has been an Albertan for over 35 years. Moving permanently to Canmore in 2020 following a successful career in the Oil & Gas industry. Since joining APTS in the Winter of 2021 as a FireSmart Labourer, Greg obtained his WTA level 3 chainsaw certification. Greg is keen to learn and become proficient in all aspects of the services offered by APTS. With his wealth of experience in field operations and health and safety systems we feel lucky to have Greg as a key member of our team.
Eric Scott-Iversen
Originally from North Vancouver, Eric has been in the Bow Valley since the fall of 2021, he joined the APTS crew at the start of 2022. Eric brings a positive attitude to work everyday. He provides essential support in his role as a tree climber and supervisor, ensuring the safety of all those around him, while maintaining a smooth flow of productivity at every job site.
Theo van Zyl
Born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, Theo first moved to Hamilton, Ontario, where he completed his Forestry Technician Diploma prior to moving to Alberta. He has lived in Canmore for over 6 years and has been a returning seasonal crew member with APTS since 2020. Recently ending a 15 year career in wildfire fighting, Theo brings with him dedication to building a strong team, sharing his extensive knowledge of the forest and FireSmart practices and an exceptional aptitude with a chainsaw. Theo is a certified Danger Tree Assessor and supervisor and his goal is to become a certified arborist with plans to see what else the industry has to offer internationally.
Logan Warne
Originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, Logan moved to Banff in 2012. He has been living in the Bow Valley for 12 years and joined APTS in May 2023. He started his career as a Grounds Attendant at Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and graduated with a certificate in Arboriculture at Olds College. Logan is keen and enthusiastic to learn all aspects of tree services. We’re excited to see him climb to new heights!
Mel Heyd
Local Albertan, she has called Canmore home for the past 10 years. Mel has been with APTS since 2021 as our Administrative Coordinator. She has over a decade of administrative experience and specializes in office organization and maintaining health and safety programs. Mel has earned her WTA level 3 chainsaw certification and continues to grow her knowledge and skills in the tree care industry.
